[value] => There was an article in the teams about car scrapping guidelines. So this news probably didn’t mean as much to the rest of the population as it did to Giveacar employees but the fact remains it is something that affects millions of car owners across the UK. So what is this big event?
Until this new move spearheaded by Chris Davies, MEP (one of eight) for the North West, it was possible to tick the self-scrapped box in your logbook and bear no legal responsibility for ‘your’ car. This meant that any lamppost advertised rogue scrap dealer could then take the car off your hands. These people often go on to cut costs by improper disposal of cars. Cars are hazardous waste and this is of horrendous consequence for our environment.
Just one litre of car oil or brake fluid can contaminate 100 litres of water. Car tyres are often just dumped. Eliminating this possibility by requiring that car owners get a Certificate of Destruction for their vehicle should greatly improve End-of-Life vehicle disposal. Firms like Giveacar operate legally. We issue Certificates of Destruction to customers and use only Authorised Treatment Facilities where 85% of the weight of a car is recycled. All cars are recycled to the highest standards.
This new move by the Government is great because the 1 million cars that are currently unaccounted for (2 million leave the road each year with only 1 million of those issued a COD) each year should be reduced and the benefit to the environment of this will be enormous.
