The Government Vehicle Scrappage Scheme Explained

Aug
9
Although the Government’s Vehicle Scrappage Scheme has now closed to new orders, there are still options if you wish to scrap your car.
Opened in April 2009, the Scrappage Scheme allowed owners of cars more than ten years old to claim a £2000 reduction in the price of a new car (funded half and half by the Government and manufacturer) by sending the vehicle to a scrap yard. The idea was to boost the sales of the car industry, which had been flagging, and to encourage people to get rid of cars which were less environmentally friendly and potentially less safe than modern ones. The scheme lasted from the 18 May 2009 to the end of March 2010 and was only open to cars that: had been in the owner’s possession at least 12 months; weighed 3.5 tonnes or less; was registered in the UK on or before 29 February 2000; and was taxed, tested and MOTed when the order for the new vehicle was placed.
Luckily, at Giveacar, we’re far less picky and will take any vehicle registered with the DVLA and turn it into money to donate to a worthy cause. So if you were hoping to dispose of your car or van through the Scrappage Scheme, why not consider choosing the hassle-free, feel-good option of donating to charity through Giveacar?
