You CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Charity Name: Baobab Centre

The Baobab Centre for Young Survivors in Exile provides a range of psychological and psychosocial therapies for refugee and asylum seeking children and young people who have witnessed or been victims of extreme violence.  We address clients’ multiple trauma and cumulative losses to help them rebuild their lives.  We support them in gaining refugee status, obtaining accommodation, benefits, healthcare, education and employment.  We aim to transform their lives to enable them to participate in and feel part of their new community.
We currently have 60 clients many of whom are unaccompanied and have lived at the margins of society, lacking the practical and emotional support that they need to develop into independent young adults. All have experienced profound loss and witnessed adults in their home communities using often extreme and perverse violence to solve conflicts over values, beliefs, resources and power. Some were forcibly recruited as child soldiers; others were trafficked for sexual purposes. All live with profound trauma. With help, their shattered lives can be rebuilt and it is a testament to Baobab’s success that all the young people participate in education or in paid or voluntary work.
