Keep Britain Tidy

We are an environmental charity and the anti-litter campaign for England.

We also run programmes such as Eco-Schools, Blue Flag and Quality Coast Awards for beaches, and the Green Flag for parks to demonstrate practical action.

Keep Britain Tidy works across England to bring about sustained improvements in the quality of local environments. We have an alliance with our counterparts in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

We do this by:

• Campaigning – against litter and neglect, for better cared for and more attractive places
• Helping – by providing knowledge, advice and support
• Leading – by inspiring policy and practical action

What we do

• We campaign on all litter related issues such as: dog fouling, fast food litter and cigarette litter.  
• We run the Eco-Schools programme, the Blue Flag/Quality Coast beach awards, as well as the Green Flag Awards in England.  
• We run the “Keep Britain Tidy” network to assist local authorities and other land managers in improving performance in local environmental quality (we have 150 members). We are also involved in training and run courses for local authority staff on issues like tackling environment crime.
• We produce The Local Environmental Quality Survey of England (LEQSE) which is carried out by Keep Britain Tidy on behalf of Defra.  It is the biggest survey of its kind and looks at 19,000 sites in a representative sample of local authorities across all 9 regions of England over a 12-month period from April 1st to March 31st. It looks at litter, detritus (dirt, grit, soil), fly-posting, fly-tipping, graffiti.

Keep Britain Tidy – the facts

• Phil Barton is our chief executive, appointed in March 2008. We have about 120 members of staff, of which 50 work from home and 70 are based at our office in Wigan.
• Our annual income is around £10 million a year. Half comes from Government (Defra - Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs). We also create our own revenue from things like the research work we do for local authorities and income gained from training courses).
