Charity car donation in North America is big business. To illustrate this, consider the example of the Kidney Car Program. Since it was founded in 1983, they have taken in 685,000 cars, trucks or boats and re-sold them for charity. This is just one of the thousands of programs that operate in the States.
Has car donation positively affected charities?
In a word, yes! Most major charities operate programs and view car donation as a key source of income. Indeed, some charities have their own car forecourts where they sell only cars that are donated.
Why is car donation so popular in USA?
The US government welcomes car donation and offers tax breaks for those willing to give away their cars. As long as they show proof, residents are allowed to deduct the value of their car's sale price from their tax return. Unfortunately, because car donation is not common in the UK, this practise does not exist as of yet.
Was Giveacar inspired by any particular website?
Yes! Because we do not have the advantage of generous tax laws, we looked for a different way to import the idea of car donation to the UK. Giveacar's founder, Tom Chance, stumbled across the website Charitycar.us. Charitycar offered a different approach to most other donation websites because they offer to collect vehicles that are not roadworthy. Benefiting from the high value of scrap metal, they offer free collection and disposal of cars. They then donate the value of the scrap metal to charity. We thought we could replicate this idea, but instead of picking up the cars ourselves, we would simply organise to have them picked up. It's a simple process but it really works!
