Chelmsford Mencap
CHELMSFORD MENCAP is an independent charity established in 1951, giving lifelong support to children and adults with learning disabilities in and around Chelmsford. Our members, who are of all ages, have a range of disabilities such as autism and Down’s syndrome, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, sensory impairment, speech and language difficulties and many more.
The majority of our members are socially and financially excluded from enjoying activities we all take for granted. Chelmsford Mencap are dedicated to giving them the opportunity to socialise, make new friends and gain independence in safe surroundings whilst being cared for by our dedicated team of staff and volunteers. We operate a number of subsidised clubs and events across Chelmsford on a weekly basis, and daily during holidays, giving parents and carers much needed respite. We also organise social events for the whole family to enjoy.
Our newest project is the Outreach Academy, which opened on 3rd October 2011 at our own refurbished premises in Mildmay Road. Here anyone with a learning disability over the age of 19 has access to lifelong learning through attending workshops on topics such as basic literacy and numeracy, health and fitness, arts and crafts and many more. The Outreach Academy is open all year round, Monday – Friday from 9.30 until 3.30.
Chelmsford Mencap are a completely independent organisation, are self governed and self financed. We are able to use the name Mencap through affiliation to the Royal Society (Royal Mencap), but they do not provide us, or any of the other local Mencap organisations, with any income or funding.
Any funding raised by Royal Mencap never gets passed down to local groups.
For all the services and activities we provide for our members, Chelmsford Mencap have to seek our own funding.
In these harsh financial times it is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain the funds to continue our work. Any donation you make will help us maintain our services to one of the most vulnerable groups in society.
