Child of Hope

Child of Hope produces huge social impact for slum children and their families from its school in Eastern Uganda – by providing free education, healthcare, welfare, food and clothing to kids from the poorest and most vulnerable slum families. Even start-up businesses for their mums.

It all takes place in the Namatala slum near Mbale, where survivors from years of strife in the north struggle to make ends meet. Up to 30,000 people live there, around half of which are school age. But poverty prevents most of them going to school.

Child of Hope’s welfare team does amazing, ground-breaking work. It carries out regular home visits on all our children and offers their families free social care, numeracy/literacy training, family planning and health awareness that includes sanitation and hygiene, road safety and malaria control.

As a result, mortality rates are being reduced, while sanitation and hygiene are dramatically improved. We also have a fostering programme for children who are orphans or unable to live with their immediate or extended families.

We have also developed a highly-effective medical provision that is reaping huge rewards in the health of our pupils. We even successfully fight malaria, which all our children have suffered from.
