Freewheelers Theatre and Media

Charity Name: Freewheelers Theatre and Media

The Freewheelers Theatre Company is a Leatherhead based charity giving people with and without disabilities the chance to produce and participate in high-quality original theatre, film and dance that challenges barriers and perceptions. Freewheelers is run by a dedicated, close-knit team of artists, volunteers, and performers who like to work collaboratively and to surprise people.

Our current membership have spina bifida, cerebral palsy, autism, epilepsy, speech, visual and hearing impairments, learning disabilities, mental health issues, some are accident victims, and others have no disability. They range in age from 16 up (we have no upper age limit and are planning a workshop for still younger people). Seven young people come to us out of school as part of their curriculum.

We like to work with other professional artists and have recently been
involved with English Touring Opera. Currently we are working with a
professional musician, film, digital and sound artists on a London 2012 Inspire Marked film and dance project called Steep Rain which is supported by the Arts Council and is for the Olympic Festival.

We run workshops in primary and secondary mainstream schools about understanding disability. We provide training opportunities, and many of the workshops are mentored by our regular members.

Our members come from across Surrey and the South East edges of Greater London – anywhere with a feasible journey time – but our performing reach is across South East England from Chatham to Farnham, from The Albany in
Deptford to Brighton. Our ultimate aim is to found other Freewheelers
Theatre Companies across the UK.
