Sherman Theatre

Charity Name: Sherman Theatre

The Sherman Theatre is one of Wales’s leading producing houses, working in both English and Welsh with a particular remit for the development and presentation of new writing.

The Sherman makes and curates exciting theatre for Cardiff audiences. They develop and nurture the work of Welsh and Wales based artists. They generate opportunities for the citizens of Cardiff to connect with theatre through relevant, inspiring and visionary engagement.

The venue houses two auditoria – the beautiful Main House with a seating capacity of 452 and the versatile octagon shaped Studio Theatre which can seat up to 200. They produce a spring season of Welsh premieres and contemporary plays, an open season throughout the summer, an autumn classic text and two actor-musician Christmas shows, one for Under 7s and one for families.

The Sherman curates the best of UK and international work from incoming companies and supports the work of other Welsh companies and emerging touring companies. Over the past year they have supported and developed emerging bilingual new work company, Cwmni Pluen, as their first company in residence, who have benefitted from and contributed to the Sherman’s ecology.

They are committed to nurturing young and emerging talent and run an extensive Creative Learning programme ranging from Youth Theatres, Choirs and Sherman Plays for older audiences, to inclusive theatre groups and community led productions.

The Sherman 5 scheme, funded by Paul Hamlyn Foundation, is designed to attract audiences who have never been to the theatre before from a range of diverse backgrounds and is championing audience development in South Wales.
