Their award-winning Suicide Crisis Centre has received national and international attention, including from the Ministry of Health in New Zealand. Although they are open to anyone who is feeling suicidal, they have a particular commitment to supporting people whose crisis has […]

Action Medical Research – Rare Disease Day

Danny was diagnosed with Hunter syndrome when he was three years old, having had a history of developmental delay. Tragically, tests would find that he had the worst possible outlook – a complete gene deletion in his DNA. His parents are painfully aware that time with their youngest son will be cruelly cut short by this rare disease. Hunter syndrome almost exclusively affects boys. It’s caused by a faulty gene that leads to the lack of an enzyme that’s vital for breaking down sugars in the body. Without this enzyme, waste sugar molecules build up in all the major organs, […]

BHF – Stroke

Around 1.5 million people in the UK have been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation (AF). Thirty years ago, you’d only receive treatment for it if you experienced symptoms like palpitations, sweating and difficulty breathing. AF doesn’t always show symptoms, however even with no noticeable symptoms it can increase the risk of stroke. In fact, it’s been associated with increasing the risk of stroke by as much as five times. In April 2016, David was a fit 52-year-old. But shortly after completing a 10km run, he suffered a major stroke. David had developed AF, a condition which puts you at much higher […]

But in 2010, her whole world turned upside down after being diagnosed with FH following a heart attack. Even though Jovita’s father died of a heart attack, her mum and two […]

BHF – Heart Attack

In the 1960s more than 7 out of 10 heart attacks in the UK were fatal, but thanks to research, there’s been a revolution in how we treat heart attacks and today at least 7 out of 10 people survive. Before the mid-1970s, nobody really understood what caused heart attacks. On 7 April 2020, 66-year-old Alice Timmons put her chest pain down to indigestion. By the following afternoon, the pain hadn’t gone away but Alice was reluctant to get help. It was during the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic and she thought ‘they’re busy, there’s probably nothing wrong with […]

5 Benefits of Protecting Rainforests

Taylor’s Story – Mencap

We were so excited when we got news we were having another little boy. My son Lucas was over the moon when he found out he would have a little brother to play with.
